Chapter 27

Joey entered the holy inner sanctum of Nefertiti’s deadly labyrinth. After hearing Marie’s distressed call, he’d swum to the steps and hurried up them to see the three of them being swallowed up by the quicksand.

Even though they were holding deadly still, they sank further and further.

Abdul reacted swiftly, wading out of the water in the direction of his boss, but Joey stopped him at the sand’s edge with a heavy hand pressed against his chest.

‘Don’t be stupid, man,’ said Joey. ‘It’s quicksand. If you walk over there, you’ll be sucked down too.’

‘I have to help Youssef,’ Abdul responded in an angry voice, as though Boyce and Marie meant nothing.

‘This is just another test,’ said Joey firmly. ‘We need to think.’

‘Think, my ass.’

‘Joey!’ Marie cried. ‘Quick!’

‘The rope,’ Abdul said suddenly, grabbing it off Joey’s shoulder and tossing it over to the one person he cared for.

Youssef managed to grasp hold with both hands. Abdul braced himself on the stone steps, his body half submerged in water, and tugged on the line, but strangely this only made the situation worse.

As Abdul pulled, Youssef sank deeper into the soupy mixture of sand and water.

‘Stop!’ warned Joey. ‘You’re just pushing him under. You need to get to higher ground to wrench them out.’

Joey gestured over to a ledge on the other side that was like a giant viewing platform with a curved granite balustrade.

‘How do we get across if we can’t walk on the sand?’ said Abdul, frowning, the wrinkles on his face deepening further.

‘I don’t know,’ said Joey, trying to think fast as he surveyed the site before him. He ran his hands through his wet blond locks.

‘Time is running out,’ said Youssef, and for the first time they all heard a note of fear in his voice. His head and neck were all that remained above the sand as he endeavored to keep still so he would not go under. ‘Quickly!’

Marie whimpered as the shoulder straps from her black dress were now completely consumed. To her side, Boyce shut his mouth as his chin rested atop the goopy, sandy surface, but his grim expression said all that needed to be said.

‘Hang on, guys I’m working on it. If you go under, hold your breath and leave your hands up over your head,’ said Joey, taking another glance at the Anubis figures before him with their raised scepters. Turning to Abdul, he said, ‘I don’t think these statues are just here for decoration. I think they serve another purpose.’ Abdul only shrugged.

In a rush, Joey moved to study the enormous sculpture to his right, encircling it with his hands, then gliding them across its smooth surface. The distressed sighs from the others continued, gradually becoming more desperate.

‘Hurry, Joey,’ Marie called.

Finding nothing out of the ordinary, Joey darted over to his left and his eyes came alive.

‘The spiral symbol,’ he uttered loud enough for all to hear. ‘It’s on the feet of Anubis.’

‘Follow it,’ Marie blurted, before shutting her lips as she
